Ever wondered how a simple grape transforms into an award-winning wine while staying on Mother Nature’s good side? SEQ’s latest study visit to Súdovce – Chrastavá Hora Farm in the framework of the Gray Grows Green in Czechia and Slovakia projec offered a group of curious seniors and eco-enthusiasts the chance to learn just that—and more! With stunning views, organic grapes, and some truly eye-opening (and taste bud-pleasing) experiences, this was an unforgettable journey into the world of sustainable agriculture.
Wine Not Learn About Sustainability?
Our adventure kicked off with a warm welcome and a pre-assessment survey. (We know, we know—surveys sound dull, but we promise it got better!) With our brains warmed up and ready, we launched into a tour that was as inspiring as it was practical.
Enter Ing. Peter Šťastný, our guide, farm manager, and all-around grape wizard. This guy knows everything about grape varieties, organic pest management, and why volcanic soil is a winemaker’s secret weapon. He gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the farm’s eco-friendly practices, which sparked heated but friendly debates on topics like local food production. (We love a good sustainability chat!)
Water You Doing to Save the Planet?
A highlight of the day was learning about the farm’s innovative water collection techniques. Peter explained how they catch rainwater and use it to nourish the vines, minimizing the impact on local water resources. One participant humorously declared, “If only we could catch tears from crying over climate change, we’d be all set!” (Hey, we love a good climate joke.)
Old Grapes, New Tricks
We then explored the historic 100-year-old wine cellar, carved into tuff rock and recently modernized. As Peter walked us through the fermentation process, he explained how grape by-products are repurposed to make fine distillates—no grape goes to waste here! This led to a lively discussion about the zero-waste lifestyle and the famous “5R” principles: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle. The seniors were buzzing with ideas on how to make everyday life a little more eco-friendly.
Not Just for the Taste Buds
After all that brain food, it was time for the real feast! We sampled local wines paired with mouth-watering pâté, and cheeses coming from the farm of Mr. Šťastný’s son, and wild meat from the surrounding forests. As we clinked glasses and discussed our newfound knowledge, someone wisely noted, “Wine and sustainability taste better together!” It turns out that delicious food, fresh air, and a sense of purpose are key ingredients for good mental health. (It’s science, folks!)
What We Learned (Besides Wine Tasting)
The visit wasn’t just about eating and drinking—though we certainly excelled at that! Participants walked away with a new appreciation for organic farming, the benefits of community gardening, and the magic of working with soil. We even discussed the mental health perks of getting your hands dirty. Gardening, fresh air, and producing your own food? It’s the secret to happiness! Peter himself claims that this labor of love brings him immense joy, even after a long day at his primary job.
Ready to Get Your Hands Dirty?
The day was a perfect blend of fun, learning, and meaningful conversations about sustainability. By the end, our participants were bursting with ideas to make their own communities greener. From zero-waste cooking to planting grapevines (or maybe just tending to houseplants—baby steps!), the visit inspired everyone to take actionable steps toward a more sustainable future.
So, if you missed this epic day, don’t worry! SEQ has more adventures lined up, and we promise you’ll have just as much fun. But remember, you’ve got to be ready to learn, laugh, and maybe even share a grape-inspired joke or two.
Cheers to a greener world—one vineyard at a time!
