The Green Triangle Project: An Inspirational Journey to Brussels

On June 24, 2024, a group of enthusiastic young people arrived in Brussels as part of the Erasmus+ project, “The Green Triangle.” This significant journey marked the final international mobility phase of the project, bringing together core team members from Armenia, Poland, and Slovakia. The aim was to provide these young minds with an immersive experience, where they could interact with European decision-makers, share their thoughts, and gain firsthand insight into the workings of European legislation and values.

June 25: A Day of Discovery and Dialogue

Visit to the BIJ National Office

The first substantial day of the study trip began on June 25. The youth kicked off their activities with a visit to the BIJ National Office. Here, they were introduced to the various programs, opportunities, and projects that the office supports and implements for young people. The session was interactive, allowing the participants to ask numerous questions, gaining a profound understanding of the organization’s mission and its impact on youth development. The atmosphere was charged with curiosity and eagerness, as the young participants explored the possibilities that lay ahead for them.

Tour of the European Parliament

Following this enlightening visit, the group headed to the European Parliament. They were warmly welcomed by Adam Jarubas’ Polish MEP assistant, who provided them with an insightful tour of the Parliament building. The young participants were fascinated by the behind-the-scenes look into the daily lives of policymakers. They learned about the intricacies of legislative processes, the importance of democratic participation, and the impact of their voices in shaping the future of Europe. The session was not just informative but also inspiring, as the assistant patiently answered all their questions, particularly those related to sustainability.

Engagement at the European Commission

The day’s activities continued with a visit to the European Commission. The group was greeted by members of the Education for Climate Coalition. This session delved into the Commission’s role in drafting and supporting scientific research for legislative amendments and regulations. The discussions were rich and engaging, covering topics like climate change, sustainability, and the critical role of young people in these areas. The participants also had the opportunity to present details of their project and share the activities they had undertaken over the past year.

One of the highlights of the visit was the introduction to the GreenComp conversation game. This interactive and thought-provoking game, based on the Sustainable Development Goals, provided the participants with a unique way to reflect on and discuss sustainability issues. Frederic WILLIQUET and Tremeur DENIGOT were exceptional hosts, guiding the young visitors through the complexities of the Commission’s work with enthusiasm and clarity.

A Message to Decision-Makers

In both the European Parliament and the European Commission, the young participants presented a letter to the decision-makers. This letter, part of the “Dear Tomorrow” initiative, encapsulated their suggestions, views, and vision for a sustainable future. It was a powerful gesture, symbolizing the bridge between the youth’s aspirations and the policymakers’ responsibilities. These letters are considered valuable tools for conveying the thoughts and opinions of young people to those in positions of power.

June 26: Reflection and Farewell

Morning Reflections and Sustainability Planning

The second day, June 26, began with a morning reflection session. The international team gathered to evaluate the past year, sharing their experiences, growth, and the knowledge they had gained. This session was deeply personal, allowing each participant to express how the project had impacted their lives. The discussion also covered the sustainability plan, ensuring that the project’s positive effects would continue long after its conclusion. Each individual planned to implement their sustainability initiatives based on their needs, life circumstances, and interests.

Sustainability Treasure Hunt in Brussels

Following the reflection session, the participants embarked on a sustainability treasure hunt across Brussels. This engaging activity was designed to help them discover the sustainable aspects and opportunities within the city. It was a fun and educational experience, allowing the young people to explore Brussels while learning about its efforts toward sustainability.

Farewell Lunch

The one-year project culminated with a farewell lunch in the heart of Brussels. This gathering was a bittersweet moment, filled with gratitude and a sense of accomplishment. The participants shared their hopes for the future, reminisced about the incredible journey they had undertaken, and expressed their desire to meet again, albeit in different circumstances.

Looking Ahead

As the young participants bid farewell to Brussels and each other, they carried with them a wealth of knowledge, experiences, and memories. The “The Green Triangle” project had not only educated them about sustainability but also empowered them to be active contributors to a better future. They returned to their respective countries with a renewed commitment to make a difference, armed with the insights and inspiration gained from their European adventure.

We hope to see these young leaders continue to grow, innovate, and inspire others in their quest for a sustainable and just world. Until we meet again, may their journey be filled with purpose and their actions with impact.
