We are moving forward with Empower Yourself 2 Advocate 4 Wellbeing project!

As part of our Slovakia-Armenia project, EmpowerYourself2Advocate4SelfBeing, we gathered in Závažná Poruba, Slovakia, for an enriching experience filled with educational sessions, discussions on future initiatives, and community-building activities. This event was an opportunity to dive into important topics like eco-anxiety, tech addiction, psychological first aid, journaling, fostering personal growth and advocacy skills. We also got to test our StratYouWell educational materials!

The event took place from November 28 to December 4, 2024, lasting seven days, including five days of workshops and two days for travel. It was held at Cottage Opalisko in Závažná Poruba, Slovakia, in a private space with dedicated areas for dining, workshops, and relaxation.

Our program was designed collaboratively, with participants selecting topics of interest. Each session was interactive, often beginning with energizers to set the tone. Key topics covered included psychological first aid, where we explored how to respond to crisis situations effectively, understanding that even well-meant words can sometimes do more harm than good. Learning the right approach helped us enhance our ability to support others. In the journaling for mental well-being session, participants received personal journals and were introduced to various prompts. We reflected individually and shared insights, discussing how writing can foster self-awareness and emotional clarity.

We examined sleep cycles, common myths, and best practices for improving sleep. Questions like “Is drinking coffee before bed okay?” and “Does total darkness improve sleep?” led to engaging discussions and practical takeaways. Through interactive discussions, we analyzed the role of dopamine in our digital habits. A self-assessment helped us recognize our own tech dependencies, prompting meaningful conversations on strategies for mindful technology use.

Then we engaged in games that encouraged self-reflection on mental well-being, personal goals, and emotional awareness. These activities helped us recognize our strengths, challenges, and aspirations in a fun and interactive way.

We had the chance to test another one of our board games, and after the session, we received valuable feedback to make it even better!

In groups, we worked on project development exercises, tackling questions like funding sources, risk assessment, and effective communication strategies. This hands-on session equipped participants with essential project management skills.

Through guided visualization, we created personal safe spaces in our minds, offering a technique to combat anxiety and stress. This exercise helped participants build a mental refuge they can access anytime. As part of our ongoing project, we brainstormed ideas for an upcoming hackathon, discussing potential themes, prizes, and organizational logistics. We also planned future webinars featuring experts in mental health and advocacy.

A scenic hike led us to a breathtaking viewpoint over Liptovský Ján. Some participants even took a plunge in a nearby thermal spring, experiencing the invigorating power of stepping out of their comfort zones. In Veľká Lomnica, we visited the ZEBRA center, where we learned about their impactful work with underprivileged families. This experience reinforced the importance of grassroots initiatives in community support. Experts from STORM (working with marginalized communities), the Ministry of Health, and Koľaj 22 (a local community center) shared insights on mental health projects, further expanding our understanding of advocacy efforts. Slovak participants introduced Armenian guests to local traditions, including Easter celebrations, folk music, and traditional dishes. This cultural exchange fostered a deeper appreciation for each other’s heritage.

Participants gained valuable insights into journaling as a self-care tool, supporting others through psychological first aid, improving sleep for better mental health, managing tech addiction and dopamine-driven behaviors, community-building and effective project planning, and the impact of local NGOs on mental health advocacy. Many also developed new skills, such as public speaking, leading workshops, and presenting in English. Overcoming these challenges together strengthened our confidence and teamwork.

This event was a resounding success. With new friendships, skills, and motivation, we are excited to continue our work on upcoming initiatives, including the hackathon and further advocacy programs.

This week-long journey left us inspired and empowered. Both the Slovak and Armenian teams are eager to implement what we’ve learned into our future projects. Whether it was discovering the importance of good sleep habits, embracing the power of nature, or realizing the strength of community, every participant walked away with valuable lessons and connections. The future looks bright as we take these insights forward into meaningful action!
